Fiona went on. She cursed herself for not asking directly about Will Kid.

She became aware that certain shadows moved with her, intent about their own business. She felt one of a silent hurrying crowd. She must be going the right way. Everyone, it seemed, was going to the games.

The darkness ahead grew even more impenetrable. Fiona had long lost sight of the highway and she missed it. It was something familiar in this alien place.

She realised she was approaching a large circular building that reared up and blotted out the light before her. Others went that way also. Near to the ground were dim lights, oddly flickering. As Fiona came closer she saw they were torches, naked flame, burning in the sullen air with smoky defiance.

People were passing through a creaking turnstile. For the first time Fiona wondered about money. She never handled money. All her dealings were automated. She came closer and watched. This was really funny, she thought in a hollow way. She was the richest person there, richer than all these people put together and multiplied by ten. By ten times ten. More. But she had no cash and could not pay.

She leant against the wall and watched with narrowed eyes.

It was a moment before she realised she was being spoken to.

'You going in?'

'I don't have the fare, brother.'

'If I paid you in, maybe we could play some games together, huh?'

'Maybe. Are you good?'

'Good enough. Let's go.'

Inside was bedlam, more than a thousand people milling in hot dirty confusion as they climbed the stairways to reach the tiered rows above an arena brilliantly lit with floodlights and at the moment quite empty. The smell of food caught in Fiona's nostrils and made her gag. Hot greasy food crudely overspiced surrounded her. People wolfed at packets held in their hands and then threw away underfoot what they did not want. That and the sweet sickly overlay of synthetic alcohol was a nauseous combination.

They moved into the crowd, the man keeping close to her. Fiona could sense he was ready to grab her, to stake his claim on her body and exact first payment from her mouth for his generosity in bringing her in. She saw a particularly thick knot of people and vanished the far side of them, dropping swiftly through the rows and doubling back the way they had come. She attached herself to a group of three and walked close behind them, as if she belonged, till she was sure she had unloaded her sucker.

Now she began to search in earnest.

She went systematically through the great
